The lead up to perhaps the most memorable scene in the film version of Like Water For Chocolate, here we see Tita preparing a rose petal sauce with the roses given to her by her forbidden love. As she cooks, she pours all of her desire for him into her cooking, where it is magically transmitted those who eat her food. A rather aroused dinner ensues, fueled by all the energy of Tita’s passionate yearning.
This piece hangs in the dining room of the home I share with my lover, where we see having friends for dinner as a sacred spiritual practice. Tita’s presence reminds us of the communicative power of food, the intimacy that can occur when people break bread together, and the contagious magic of our own emotions.
